The Japanese whaling fleet is at it again. :jpshakehe It seems they nearly got their quota from the Antarctic + a few Fins whales in the mix. I understand they will be after Pacific Minke in addition to the Sperm whale. The Sperm whale is a protected species. It's very frustrating to see these jerks go after something that no one seems to really want - even in Japan. What's really cheap is that they are foisting the meat onto hospital patients. Grrrrrrrh. What can we do?
There has to be something.

Hey Catherine...nice to see you here. I think the same efforts we put forth this winter are our best efforts. It'll be interesting to see who pops up in defense of
"scientific whaling" or "sustainability" since the whalers are going after some protected species this time around. If anything, this signals opportunism on the part of the fleet and pseudo-scientists.

The sad thing from the Antarctic efforts was that the whalers got so many "scientific" specimens - a total sham and incredible waste of an international marine resource.

Great Idea. Let's hunt the with some of those big rusty harpons they used back in the days.

How do you think Whalers are cooked?
Barbecued over raging fire or slowly and painfuly roasted ?

Ill try both.

* The whole " scientific fishery" is opportunism. So why wouldnt this be too?

People and their weird concoctions. Baby seals for erection, whale for ....i dont remember, shark fins for soup (some shark hunters kill the shark, saw off the fins and throws the rest in the water), mint scratched in their back against cold (scratched like when their back is bloodied all over..harder you scratch the better you get.....right)

Being from California, I'm all for environmental preservation. I'm just curious...what steps did you take last winter?

I always admire folks who take it upon themselves to "do something." As I said, this is certainly a worthy cause. I'm afraid my information on this topic is quite dated, but it was once "common knowledge" that Sweden was a whaling country too. Did they ever hang up their harpoons?

Sweden quit a while ago. Norway still hunts Minke Whale.

The efforts were to enlist good folk to write petition letters to Gorton USA, owned wholly by Nissui Corporation. In addition, folks living in New Zealand could probably petition SeaLord of New Zealand also owned by Nissui. Nissui owns a significant portion of the Japanese whaling fleet.

Environmental groups like Greenpeace, Sea Shepards, World Wildlife Federation, The Humane Society seek to end whaling. They can be supported with financial donations and volunteer support. Also, there are many members here on the Scubaboard that seek to educate and support the end of modern whaling. Since this topic does carry a heavy dose of emotion I would encourage folks to make comments related towards educational activism.

What's encouraging is that the good folks of Japan have seem to have lost their taste for whales. It'll be interesting to see how the industry tries to move meat that is no longer in demand. The latest was to process meat into pet foods, or move meat into the hospitals.

kim, i don't mean to piss you off... and you know i think the world of you

but i think you moderating this thread is just asking for trouble, given your
strong views on the subject

i would ask that, for the health of this thread, a more neutral mod step in
to keep us in line down here

your views on this are simply too polarized

my two cents
