looking at the new SnS YS-D1 and wondering whether to buy one or not, then it suddenly dawned on me what most divers with new cameras need is a still flash that also can do short 5-10min bursts of video light so that you can effectively do both on the same dive. Many new cameras have HD video capability and making the call on which to have on your rig must be a pain.

Instead of putting a (mostly) useless focus light - why not a video light? Not particularly interested in towing around a video light to use as a flash substitute either.

Anybody heard of such a thing and are there any technical reasons why you could not build such a light?

There is the DS161 but the video light kind of sucks. Best to use a video light as focus/dive light and a small strobe.
