I've been fascinated by rebreathers since I was about 14, and now that I'm through college, I might actually have the means to get into rebreather diving within the next couple years. But before then, I'd like to actually try one, and see if it is for me, and also get a chance to compare the various brands and see which one would be the best unit for me. Is there any programs like this running, and how would I find out about them?

Thanks,
Jim

hi Jim

i will tell you that hubby spent at least six months try-diving all the units he could.

he got in contact with the local distributors/trainers and ended up diving the optima, prism, evo, inspo, kiss, meg and he talked to local divers about their units, their diving, what they liked and disliked.

and see if any local clubs have a group of rebreathers to talk to??

i suggested last week to my local club about having a breather night with all the above units (lots of our members have units) plus more (mk15, revo & home build) so people can actually see them all in the same room to touch and ask questions (should happen in Jan/Feb)

Thanks, that's a good idea. My LDS is very small, and doesn't really do much tech at all, let alone rebreathers. I know my tech shop can sell me several brands of rebreather, but I've never really seen many of their guys using them, so I might have some searching on my hands, to see what is in the area.

You need to PM Curt Bowen, on this board. Curt has sponsored a number of these. He is a huge supporter of rebreathers, and features many articles about expeditions he sponsors using rebreathers. He is also hosting a large gathering at DEMA this year involving rebreathers. Curt can provide more information about opportunities to compare and contrast different rebreathers in a classroom setting.

Here is Curt's thread on the DEMA thing, complete with a link to his e-magazine:

I agree. Curt Bowen is the guy to talk to. He has set up multiple "rebreather experiences" in the past and may have some more ready to be scheduled. You can contact him through his magazine website, ADM Online

If you're ever on Cayman, Divetech does a "rebreather experience" And they've got 6 different models to choose from.

Steve, I have seen the rebreather experience of Divetech's, but as a recent college grad, the Cayman's aren't particularly close to me quite yet.;) I'd like to find something closer to compare them, but if I ever have the opportunity to get to Grand Cayman, I will definetly take that up.

Our Wakulla Shop is doing one of these in a few weeks down here in Florida. Should be a fun time.
