Say there is something behind your buddy that they are about to bump into or that might startle them (ledge, large piece of flotsom, dead seal, shark, etc.), how do you signal this other than:
You**point at buddy** just to get thier attention, might be redundant Look**make like you're going to poke your own eyes out**Behind you**point over buddy's shoulder**
:06:

um.......yeah......the "poking yourself in the eyes" them pointing in a direction is a common hand signal

How can they bump into it if its behind them? (back kick, maybe? :10: )

If I see my buddy is about to become entangled, or possibly get into trouble, I simply get their attention with my light, and tell them to look.

Another option (for the buddy that isn't paying attention to my light signal) is to gently tug on their fin or put my hand on their calf to get them to stop and turn around. Then I'll point it out.

Yes, point two of your fingers to your eyes, then point to your buddy, then point to your chest. When you have your buddy's attention, turn around quickly in the water, throw a spaz attack, turn back around, and calmly point at your buddy, while repeatively looking back over your shoulder. :D

Ok so I'm the diver who is inclined to be staring at the fish while floating backwards and bash my head on the ledge/dead seal/shark  but it could happen to somebody else so it's a good thing to know...or the hazard in question could be floating toward you if you're relatively still...Oh how do you do the "look" signal in lobster gloves? I ought to know this since that's what I was trained in but I forget.

GIdds your profile info says 0-15 dives
i think its good that you figured it out on your own even tho its a common signal.....
shows me your thinking..

Well I was trained a million years ago so I wasn't sure if there was something new I ought to know and I already knew how to signal "look at this" so I extrapolated from there.

i think you're s'posed to point to your buddy first, then poke two fingers to your eyes- as if to say, "you watch me."

as a matter of fact, i just got the hand signals for diving published by the NACD. there is a signal for potentially dangerous creature, a sign for dangerous, but no sign for "dude, you're gonna @$%! yer pants when you see this!"

I stand corrected.

Let me guess: potentially dangerous organism is signed by holding hand vertically above forehead like a shark fin? maybe twining fingers together and making them do the gnashing jaws of death thing?
