We are debating going in January on a scuba trip to Grand Cayman and staying at Sunset House. I was wondering how good this site is for a one year old. I read that there is no beach there and the pool is small. Could someone who has stayed there give an opinion on if we could bring our child with us (with caregiver) or if if it would be better for them to stay home?

Thanks!
Jenn

yes, no beach, it's ironshore, and nothing special about the pool. It's a dive resort first and foremost and probably wouldn't be my first choice in your situation.

What are your priorities - boat diving, shore diving, how much of the day do you want to be away? Do you (or your caregiver) need to be near all the restaurants/shopping/etc on the west end of the island, or no?

You might consider getting a 2BR condo someplace like the Reef on the East End (or maybe Morritts) - nice pool and beach, plus you'd have more space and some kind of kitchenette at least - commute a couple miles down the road to boat dive with Ocean Frontiers in the mornings or afternoons. You won't get shore diving, but the diving you get will be better than from Sunset House.

"Is Sunset House small child friendly?"

Yes! I used to live nearby and usually brought my small child, with her nanny, there on Sundays. I never had the slightest concern about safety for our daughter there, and my wife agrees.

I'm certainly not concerned with safety. But hanging out there for a day now and then when you're local, seems much different to me than picking the best place to spend a vacation with a baby and nondiving caregiver. Not that SH couldn't work, just that it seems other options might be better suited and more comfortable.

Here's why I wouldn't stay at Sunset House with a small child...

The caretaker just gets him/her down for a nap when a low flying Jet goes screaming over.

Just for clarification, we would be staying at Sunset House as it is a group dive trip and that is where everyone is staying. The question is whether my mom and daughter would have a good time there or not.

Oh wow, how much airplane traffic noise is there? Are planes constantly taking off/landing?

I think Sunset House will be fine. It's walking distance into Georgetown, has an adequate freshwater pool with a jacuzzi, nice sunbathing area with lounge chairs, a good restaurant etc. The only drawback is lack of a beach, but there is a very nice public beach at Smith's Cove, just down the road. It's not the Ritz, but it is upscale for a dive lodge.

The planes do fly overhead but the frequency is not that great.
If you were to stay in a condo on SMB, the distance from there to the dive shop at Sunset might be an issue. If the rest of your group is staying at Sunset, then East End would be too far away.
