Hello everyone,

I will be visiting Thailand for the first time in March 2025 aboard "The Junk."

I have an InReach Mini 2 device and would like to hear about others' experiences traveling to Thailand with similar devices.
I've already sent an email to the Thai Embassy to inquire about their regulations on bringing satellite devices into the country, but I’d appreciate any insights from the group.

Thank you!

I’ve used a similar satellite device while traveling, and as long as you're not in restricted areas (like military zones), it should be fine. It’s great you checked with the Thai Embassy also, double-check with your dive operator just in case. Safe travels and enjoy Thailand is amazing for diving!

FYI - InReach is not a PLB. If you intend to use InReach for the SOS feature, make sure that the Garmin Response Center has the ability to coordinate with local emergency personnel in Thailand.

Very curious what the embassy responds; Thailand is on Garmin's list of countries where the inReach is restricted.

This isn't quite accurate, "restricted areas" are broad, for example, the entire country of India (and in this case, Thailand). I wouldn't just assume it's fine, the penalties can be quite unpleasant, including jail time.

If it's some kind of satallite rescue beacon leave it at home. I've never seen such devices used anywhere in SE Asia (over 1000 dives) and certainly not necessary for any place the Junk will put you in the water. Whether you're in the north or south Andaman, it's all easy tropical water diving...it's not Komodo or Raja Ampat.

Contact the manufacturer for advice.
Contact the Thai Embassy is a smart move.
Contact the boat operator is logical.
The link given by @xan is priceless.

Houstonian transplant living in Thailand... you can bring it but TBH, hell you might have cell signal 90% of the time. Not sure how they do it, but even on the water, you get a signal around phuket. this boat should also have on board wifi available. Thailands more connected than u think. We're trying to lineup a trip on the junk as well, next month.
