It just struck me that it may not be the best time of year to go there. Hurricane season? Would you go, or would you find a different place?

I believe late Sept & early Oct is their peak hurricane season. I hit 2 in one week in early Oct a few years ago but didn't miss a day of diving. Better to slip into Nov.

I have been in Coz both months for the last two years. Both trips were great. However, last Sept. trip the day we were leaving there was a tropical storm on the way. We were lucky enough not to have it hit during our trip. Nice time of year as there are very few people on the reef compared to other times.

No one can predict to the day if a hurricane will hit or not, so if you're wanting to go somewhere in Oct, Coz is as good a place as any. You might luck out and get sunshine the whole time you're there or a tropical storm will blow in the day you get there, which happened when I went in Oct. But Mike is right--it's great because there aren't as many people, no one else is on the reefs and the merchants are more willing to barter, and I would assume that the # of cruise ships drops a little in low season. The weather doesn't stop you from diving--you're just as wet underwater whether it's raining or sunny! :)

I go to the Yucatan several times each year, one of which is October. I have gone in early October and have had a lot of rain. We moved the date back a couple weeks to the last week of October / first week of November and it has seemed to work so far. I have noticed the skies are either overcast or at best mostly cloudy even when no rain is in the forecast. There is also a constant breeze which can fool you into thinking it is not as hot as it really is and you get burned if you don't pay attention. And bring warm clothes for after you get out of the water and on the boat ride back. It can get chilli. A bonus during that time of year is the lack of people. Better prices, less lines, less crowds. I just reserved our hotel. 10/30 - 11/6. If you are going to be there the same time and looking for a dive buddy send me a PM. A lot of places are in the hurricane belt during that time. If you are locked into late Sept. or early Oct. you can consider places outside that band such as Aruba or cross your fingers and roll the dice. There are places online that you can do a weather forecast for that area. Some also offer you to see previous weather history. So click on the tentative dates this year but change the year to previous years and search the archives. Good luck & enjoy.
