After a lot of reading on this board about which computer to get the Suunto Vyper is top pf my list, and the Aladin Pro Ultra second. I don't see much difference between them and I just like the Suunto display, however I just have 1 more question:

My buddy uses an Aladin Pro Ultra and I understand that the Suuntos are a little more conservative so, to save us the hassle of checking each others computers and using the most conservative data all the time would it be a better idea just to get the same computer as him?

The difference in recreational computers only matters when pushing or exceeding NDL limits, or doing multiple dives. Chances are you will never see any problems, but if so, you just use the most conservative reading.

The two computers your interested in will work like this:

On some dives the suunto will give you a 3 minute stop at 3m, this is optional and if you skip through it it wont sulk too much. The aladin wont do this and so your buddy will be clear to the surface while you are sitting waiting (which means he has to wait too)

The aladin is forgiving on the depth of any stops you do, it will quite happily clear stops at 6m (20ft) when it wants you to do them at 3m (9ft). This lets you hang out deeper if its a bit lumpy on the surface. the suunto however is a picky beast and will sulk if you are below 5m and will stop counting down.

This means that most of the time he will be waiting for you. That being said there is no requiremnt for you to have the same computer, you both dive your dive and when its time to come up have agreed signals for stops (the old 'level off' signal followed by fingers held up to indicate time works for me).

It would be nice for you to have the same numbers on your wrist to save frustration, my old (and i mean OLD) aladin clears 5 minutes or so before the newer version does, this can be irritateing as i hang around waiting for my buddy.

You dont breath at the same rate and you manage to work out who is going to run out first. Just get the one you like (personally id get the aladin anyway=-) )
