I had an inguinal hernia (open) repair done about about 7 months ago. I have not taken lessons yet but they want to my doctors ok. has anyone ever had a problem with a repair hernia and diving? Is it going to prevent me from learning?

A-Rush,

Gosh I hope not. I had one fixed 'bout 15 years ago, it was never an issue. I'm surprised they want a doc's ok, may just a general ok after surgery?

All the lifting jokes aside, the real cause of hernias is poorly understood.

I'm hoping someone with real expertise can answer for us both.

Should be no trouble at all. For example, I had three hernias repaired (two inguinal and one on the upper abdominal wall) a few years ago and I dive  as often as possible with no trouble. At 7 mos. post-op you should be completely healed and able to handle any type of diving.
By the way, a hernia is a weakness in the abdominal wall that may allow contents of the abdomen to pouch out.
Good luck----- I hope you find diving as great as I have!!

It appears that your training agency is being cautious and such conservatism is prudent.

A successful herniorrhaphy done 7 months ago that has been without complication or residua should pose no problem for return to scuba. Given no other medical conditions that could pose a risk for diving, one's physician should be able to provide clearance.

On a dive trip, as elsewhere, remember proper lifting technique and avoid abuse to the abdominal musculature.

Best regards.
