I've just completed a running tally of Dandy Dons ''Accidents and Incidents'' forum for 2019...

I only included confirmed fatalities...I did not include posts listed as ''missing''...or ''lost''...

My total...273...February for some reason was an especially bad month...a number of boat strikes...a number of shark attacks...the Conception fire...gear/difficulties/failures...and far too many...''we'll never know''...

Seems to me to be horrendously high...and the year's not over yet...

It's certainly not that. I'm am but a contributor here.

Seems pretty low to me. Counting non diving fatalities (Conception, etc.) would lower the unofficial total. How many millions of dives were done this year around the world?

I've spoken to an attorney who DAN consults with at times who told me that there are a number of incidents that get zero reporting. We certainly are not informed about all scuba incidents. They are bad for business after all.

Certainly not all fatalities are reported here. Nevertheless, a quick search reveals millions of dives take place each year. So, not a whole lot of deaths compared to the number of dives. With a hot economy right now I would expect there to be more dives and consequently more fatalities. Still, I read half the non medical fatalities happen to new divers with less than twenty dives. Still a relatively safe activity, especially once you gain a little experience.

I did not mean to imply that diving is dangerous. It just isn't as safe as many think. We will never know how much less safe since reporting incidents in the media is a threat to economic/tourist interests. That is the reality. This doesn't prevent all incidents from being reported, but it does prevent some. How much is anyone's guess.
