Your homeowners insurance will most likely cover you for simple negligence claims. If you do something with INTENT (like punch someone) I don't think there's an insurance policy in the world (loyd's of london, maybe) to cover that. Anything you can think of as an "accident" would probably be covered by homeowners insurance, but I don't know the specific policy and I have no idea what coverage you would have outside the U.S.

If you are thinking about DCS or some other illness while traveling, then DAN insurance would be a nice suppliment to whatever your primary healthcare insurance is. (this only covers YOU, not anything you caused).

Notice the words like "most likely," "probably" and "I don't know" in my response - This is not legal advice. Consult with a lawyer or your insurance agent for specific information about your policies :)

Edited - put in reference to loyd's of london - they will insure against anything for a price!

I'm currently working on an article that addresses the issue. Without giving legal advice and summarizing briefly and generally: Homeowners or renters insurance generally covers liability claims. There are a handfull of exclusions that might come into play in a dive situation: (1) business pursuits, (2) professional services, (3) watercraft, (4) family members, and (5) intentional acts. If the claim arises out one of these, it will probably not be covered. There is, of course, the question of what arises out of what. Beyond that, liabilities may well be covered, especially things like dropping a weight on someone's foot, etc. Stay tuned for the article.

Bruce - what do the insurance policies have to say about events outside of the country? I have no experience in that field but now that it has been brought up, I would like to know. (don't need a detailed analysis, just want to know yes, no, sometimes, etc.)

Thanks for the info!
