Can I get your opinions on dive insurance, gear coverage, travel coverage, etc. I am semi interested in getting some kinda insurance specifically for my dive hobby but I dont know what is really best and I dont want to run out and join DAN cause I see their advertisements all over. Thats what I did with a spare air and that was a complete waste of money. Thanks

Does home owners insurance cover dive gear if it not in you home/garage when it is stolen?

DAN is actually a very good bet. you do have to become a member to get their insurance.

if you buy a "preferred" or "gold" plan or whatever they call it, the gear coverage and travel coverage are included

i'm not sure who PADI does their insurance with now, they used to have a pretty good deal

i'm pretty sure your home insurance won't cover stuff stolen somewhere else, but check your policy just in case

I've heard nothing but good things about DAN... (Including people who have actually had serious medical accidents...)

Many homeowners / renters insurance policies do but there are often conditions. We have had quite a few calls over the years from past customers that needed copies of invoices because they had a fire or were robbed etc. They have all told horror stories about getting their insurance company to pay the claim.

I would check with your insurance co. ie, "I'm thinking about purchasing some scuba gear" and want to know if it would be covered, under what conditions and what documentaion would I need to retain in the event of a claim... At least you'll know where you stand and can make more informed decisions from there.

I have no experience with gear loss coverage (touch wood), but have had limited experience with DAN's medical coverage and have been very pleased. One ear infection on a trip this year more than paid for my DAN coverage.

When I was a DM intern in the Caribbean I went to the local chamber to have a look, and try and familiarize myself more with the environment/process. The chamber Dr. made a point to me regarding insurance, that if I come in requiring serious treatment, and am covered by "Joe Blow's” travel insurance from home, I may or may not be covered. Meaning, he may or may not get paid, and a delay in treatment may occur while it gets sorted out. If I have a DAN card or tag with me, he knows he will get paid and treatment will be immediately available. Considering how reasonably priced DAN's coverage is, I have yet to see a reason to take my business elsewhere.

I guess I will look into DAN a bit more. Their rates are pretty reasonable. Thanks guys

I just called State Farm last week with the very same question regarding dive gear coverage. I was told that I would have full coverage anywhere in the world for my gear as it is covered under "personal property" subject to my $500 deductible and policy limits. Dive gear is not specifically capped like Jewelry, firearms, computers so it falls in the broad category of personal property.

Please, Please... check with your company and agent and don't take my word for it.

I went with Diveassure who competes with DAN because I liked their travel/trip interruption coverage as well as medical.

I went ahead and picked up a DAN membership with their prefered insurance plan but I was surprised to see that they really dont cover much on dive gear and if you want more coverage you go through a DAN sponsored insurance company but wow that gets spendy fast. It costs $15 for each piece of new gear you want to add to your plan, suppose thats inexpensive in comparison to getting a new MK25/S600 but if I put all my spendy gear on there it would be way over what a reg costs I think. Anyway I will just stick with the DAN plan and for $99 a year I get the membership and insurance but I have to buy any DAN merchandise I would want. Thanks for the help.

DAN is the way to go in my opinion.
