Hello - looking for a little unbiased advice please.

I have an Olympus SP-350 and need to replace a strobe unit. My options, based on budget and manufacturer preference, are either of the Inon strobes - the D2000-S and the more recently introduced s-2000.

Can anyone give some guidance as to which would be the better option?

I am generally a 30-40 dive a year, based in UK but do nearly all my dives in warmer climes such as Thailand, Indonesia, Malaysia and next month a first time visit to Philippines (Malapascua and Moalboal). I have Inon AD 105 UWL as well as the AD 165 CL so need to be sure that the s-2000 can give me the angle coverage (I have not seen any specification for this during my web searches).

Thanks for any help folks,

Philip

I'm looking at these two strobes as well. Very interested in the advise you get. Will be watching this post.

the S2000 is many powerfull than D2000, the coverage is 105°x95° the D2000 100°x100°
I think it's a good strobe but a steep behind the D2000

specification from a french saler (sorry for no translate my english is poor)

Nombre du guide: 20
Couverture angulaire: 105° x95°
Alimentation : 4 piles LR6
Nombre d'éclairs : entre 450 et 670 suivant type de piles.
Modes: S-TTL , auto, manuel
Recyclage: 1.5 seconde
Température 5500°k
Poids: 295grs
Poids sous l’eau: 69grs avec piles
Dimension: 64 x83x106mm

The two strobes (D2000 and S2000) are approximately the same power (both have GN of 20 meters) and I think the s2000 was designed to be a more or less replacement for the D2000.

Reef Photo Video has the strobes listed at S-2000 $419.00 and D-2000 $539.00. The D-2000 has dual flash tubes and a built-in modeling light as the main differences. I think the smaller size and improved electronics of the S-2000 out-weight the D-2000's extras.

I now understand that the S2000 is replacing the D2000 S so the choice has come down to the newer, cheaper s2000 or the older, more feature rich D2000. As an infrequent diver I'm leaning towards to the s2000 but need to be sure of its specs. Can anyone confirm what Bruce has pasted into his answer?

Regards to all,

Philip

The specs that Bruce sent are correct. Same guide number as the d2000, slightly less wide beam in one direction. My guess is that the only thing really different is the modeling light which some folks love, others don't. You will not be able to see any appreciable difference for any type of macro photography. For WA you will need to go to something with a bit more power IMHO
