inon have at last released their lens for the canon s95 wp-DC3 housing anyone has any comments on this??

Inon 28LD Mount Base DC38
Inon UWL-H100 28AD Wide Conversion Lens

I have not bought the housing (yet), just the camera.

The Inon web site does not indicate it is available. The announcement/leak of the lens mount has been out for a while but not the ability to buy it. This site, indicates it is still in pre-production as of November 1st.

Deepshots SOME INTERESTING NEW PRODUCTS SPOTTED AT DIVE 2010 IN NEC BIRMINGHAM.

Using the S button on land is a pain so underwater it will be worse. It is too close to the rear ring.

Information that was a little more troubling was noted on the previous day at the deepshots website. Apparently none of the existing AD lenses will work with the new dc38 mount.

Deepshots NEWS: Inon UWL-100 28AD lens will not work with Canon WP-DC38

Inon appears to be releasing a new lens model, notice the "H" in the designation.

AD lenses (ie the UWL105AD and UFL165AD) never worked well with the 28AD mount, the 28AD mount is more shallow than the AD mount. This resulted in the lens striking the port etc. Fit issues with an AD lens does not mean the 28AD lens will not fit, it is and always has been two different specifications.

It is true and is old news that RAW images seem to be larger than the jpegs with these cameras The in camera software reduces the size to the 10MP area (for lack of better description) to reduce aberrations. The RAW images require you to do the same in Canon DP but of course, you have to do it. It takes about a 95% crop of the RAW image to equal the camera produced jpeg. This occurs with the Inon lenses I have tested and with the Fisheye UWL-04, or in fact no lens but the camera in your living room, I consider it to be a non-issue.

I tell you another not well known bit, it states clearly in the Inon lens catalog and I have confirmed it true, that the Inon UWL10028AD with the dome kit naturally vignettes native equal to about a 98% crop. Taking that into account plus the RAW vs jpeg thing. This is accounted for in the claim for a 150 degree DFOV but of course you are loosing a small amount of effective sensor area.

...AD lenses (ie the UWL105AD and UFL165AD) never worked well with the 28AD mount....

"well" being the key word here. At least they could be made to work with a little ingenuity. Apparently, the new mount is actually larger in diameter to where the old lenses won't work at all.

For those of us with old lenses (i.e. UCL-165's) all we can do is hope that adaptors follow close behind.

If I were a purist who wanted perfect corner-to-corner focus the new mount and lens and dome would be something I would want, but I find I am pretty satisfied as long as most of the center of the picture is in focus and soft edges don't bother me that much. Heck, I am often satisfied if ANYTHING is in focus in underwater pictures. A new mount and lens and dome will probably set you back close to $1000, and for now for just one camera, although likely for other 28mm wide angle P&S cameras in the future. For those of us who already have AD lenses, it appears that an S95 in either a WP-DC35 housing (yes, it can be easily made to work quite well - anyone want instructions on what to do or my old one?) or a WP-DC38 housing with a modified AD adaptor for the WP-DC35 (someone else posted that it is easy to modify the adaptor to fit the new housing) seems like the best way to go at this time. If I was starting from scratch I would buy the S95, the new FIX housing and the FIX UWL-04 lens. The extra cost of a dome for the new INON lens will be likely to nearly eliminate the cost difference between the housings, or at least reduce it to a more palatable $200 or so.
