I'd like to make it down to Sherkston this year. Can anyone give an address or specific directions and/or a phone number? I don't seem to be able to find said info.
Also if anyone has been there this year I'd be interested in what current conditions are.

Thanks

I was there last Saturday.. Water temp is about 50-54 at the surface.. colder at the bottom.. Vis is about 30-40 ft.
No open water students yet :)
They are just getting ready for the season.. I think they charge $16 to get in.. I was on a course so it didn't cost me anything :)
When you show up at the gate they make you sign the obligatory waiver and they want to see a c-card...
They have a website with directions and phone numbers:
http://www.sherkston.com
Let me know if you need anything else.

Thanks. That is what I was seeking. Funny that their web site didn't show up on any searches I tried. Ah well.

I'd just as happy without students there. Do you dive there often?
As much as I'm tempted to rush down there, I might wait till June when our 14YO has his card. Sounds like it would be excellent beginners dive. Maybe I'll take a day off mid-week and miss the students.

Hmm.. The vis might be crappy in June.. I would recommend Windmill Point .. Another quarry.. Its even closer to the QEW in Fort Erie.. When Sherkston goes ugly, Windmill clears up .. they seem to be opposites..
Sherkston gets a wicked algae boom when the water warms up.. I did a few brail dives there last year.. 1ft vis..not much fun for your 14 y/o.. Windmill is simialar to Sherkston.. less the two trains..they have some boats and stuff in there.. and a few platforms that get used for teaching.. I prefer Windmill in the summer.

Sounds like it should be sooner then. :( He can always dive it next year. :)
Can you offer any more details on Windmill Point? I'm really not familiar with that part of the province.
I'm probably going to be running down to South Shore Yachts in Niagara on the Lake sometime early in the season for some boat parts. They're not urgently needed, so concentrating on what's required to launch next week. If I can make the timing work, would combine it with a dive trip.

If Sherkston is currently low 50's at the surface, do you know the approx bottom temp?

Was there on the weekend, it was about 44 F at 40 feet.

It was great vis, until some students messed it up a bit. but it was still about 20 feet, which is great for a quarry.

Saw everything, 2 train engines, 2 golf carts, some quarry rail carts, a pump house, and some train tracks. Oh a couple of fish.

It was a lot of fun. Most of the wetsuit divers didn't find it too cold till we got to about 40 minutes.

I was quite comfortable in my dry suit :) love diving dry!!!

Thanks. Will have to call them, double check rates and mid-week hours. I'm thinking I may bag a day off work (or even an afternoon, if they're open into the evening). Weekends are busy, especially the next month or so and I'd rather avoid the students.
If it's still 44 at depth, sounds like I've a little time before it warms enough for vis to get bad. Rest of this week is shot, if we get a day that stays warm into the evening, plan to try a get to a closer quarry next week. My wife has a new suit and we need to do a weight check, before we plan any more distant trips.
