Hi

My husband and I are vacationing in Cozumel in a couple of weeks and will be completing our certifications. Does anyone know any good scuba shops there? Do we have to make reservations or can we wait and find one we like?

thanks

hi nurse shark... posted this question here so folks in the know can give you info.

There are many good ones there. I recently used Liquid Blue (www.liquidbluedivers.com) and Roberto and Michaela are awesome. A fantastic dive operation. Very professional, safety oriented, fun, very knowledgeable and use the new PST high volume tanks for longer bottom times. I have also used BlueXtSeadiving (www.bluextseadiving.com) and Christi also runs a great operation. You won't go wrong with either one. You might also try www.travelnotes.cc/cozumel/links/diveshopreviews/general.html That site has some good information; although, it's not kept up to date (reviews sent in are not posted immediately; I posted one nearly a month ago and it still hasn't shown up).

I would definately make reservations in advance.

I have used Blue Angel the last two summers. They are great and their boats are small. You can book on-line or when you're down in Coz (I always wait to book until I'm there depending on weather). They're in the local phone book. If you happen to stay at the Iberostar, DO NOT use their on-site dive group (Dressel Divers). They are really bad. Hope this helps.

Ms. Nurse shark, I'd like to 2nd the endorsement of Blue XTSea as a great dive shop in Coz. My wife and I did all our classroom work at our local Y, then did our referral dives with Raul through Blue XTSea. He was incredibly patient, humorous and above all, a calming influence on a couple of newbies. We're proud to say that, as of last week, my wife and I are hopelessly addicted to scuba and the undersea life it opens up. If I can be of any further assistance with planning or advice, just say the word.

Relax and enjoy yourselves.

Liquid Blue & BlueXTSea are both awesome to say the least! I dove with Roberto (Liquid Blue) and Raul II (BlueXTSea) and had wonderful dives with both. Choose one of these two and I don't believe you can go wrong, IMHO! I can't wait to get back.

IMO you should try and make arrangements before you go. May is usually quite on the island compared to say July or Aug. but why waste your vacation time looking around for a dive op once you are there. Although there are plenty to choose from you shouldn't have a problem finding a dive op to go with if you wait but I wouldn't.

We are going in 5 weeks and are diving with Christi Blue XT Scuba.

Other ops Papa Hogs, Liquid Blue, Blue Angel, Dive with Martin, Aldora to name a few.

Have fun

A good place to start looking is http://www.cozumel-diving.net. The list of dive ops there is not exhaustive but there is a good assortment to survey, and most have websites and email. There are tons of dive ops on Cozumel, and most are very good; one decision you'll want to make early on is if you prefer diving on a larger boat with lots of other divers or on a small fast boat with 5-7 plus a DM. Either way, you will have many options.

May is not usually a very crowded time to go to Cozumel (that's one reason for my choice to go there then), and you won't have any trouble getting your trips booked. If it's your first trip to Coz, I'd advise making arrangements ahead of time for your first couple of dive days, and then use the time after diving to shop around a little. You can walk around in town and drop in to many of the dive ops; just look for their signs.

There will be a bunch of us Scubaboarders on the island in May; are you guys interested in getting together for a beer or something?

15 days and counting!
