Anyone heard anything one that might have been sunk as an artificial reef?

There's one off of Miami

Any further details? Depth, distance from shore, any dive shops go there?

Any other plane crashes in shallow water? Particularly WWII aircraft as these are one of my interests (I hear that Ft. Lauderdale had a lot of training done there during the war - not to mention the whole Flt. 19 thing).

The plane off miami is a 727 , not a 747.

A quick search found it being named the Spirit of Miami (wreck/plane).
Sunk September 8th, 1993, 3 1/2 miles off of Miami in 82 ft of water between two other artificial reefs, the South Seas and the Belcher Barge.

For more info check out this web site and also try your own google search on the name, etc.....

As for dive shops that go there..... check out the base URL of that site
and it lists all kinds of shops in the area. Check their websites or call
them as I'm sure they'll know who goes. Sounds like a neat dive.

Inicidentally, if you want to dive a plane, there is a 727 sunk in a quarry in Illinois. Might be Mermot Springs, can't remember for sure. It was used in the move US Marshalls in the plane crash scene.

Hope this helps

Yes, Mermet Springs in IL is the place. Dive it frequently. Plenty of things to see and do there. It'd be kind of fun to have someone from FL come on up and join us. Bring your warm and snugglies. :D

I did one of my OW check out dives at Mermet Springs the first time i took the class (before the car accident). I wasn't impressed.....I'm only about three hours away and wouldn't drive over to dive there again. The water was cloudy (it is the midwest after all), it was crowded (lots of divers getting in each other's way), just an all around mediocre dive (4 on a 10 scale) I definitely wouldn't drive all the way from Florida.
