I don't have any experience with scubapro. I do know that they make awesome regs... My wife is getting certified this week and I just picked her up a second hand mk20/r380 package. Now I know the mk20 is the older brother to the mk25 but that's about all I know. I can't really find anything about the 380. Any info would be great. Do you think it's a good combo? Could she take the r380 past rec depths? Is it worth it to upgrade the mk20? Thanks SB

The R380 is unbalanced. I'd use it as an octo and get a nice G250 to use as your wife's primary. As to the MK20, it is a great reg. I'd have no qualms let my kids dive with one (as long as I had serviced it!).

Much past recreational depths, the second stage will become more of a hindrance, because it is unbalanced. As mentioned above, the G250 or an S600 would better serve the purpose for that kind of diving. As for the 1st stage, the biggest difference between the MK20 & the MK25 is the MK25 has an adjustable IP (Intermediate Pressure) cap & the MK20's IP is adjusted by adding or removing shims alone. Other than that, they are pretty much identical.

Which g250 would you recommend? There's like 15 of them... V, graphite, hp,etc...

IMHO, any of them except the G250HP, because it has a plastic air barrel. A person can usually find a nice G250 on ebay for about $100, more or less. A G250V is about twice as much. The new G260 is between $340 and $375. So, it just depends on your price point.

While the G250 is a better 2nd stage than the R380, there is absolutely no reason to run out and buy your wife one even before she's certified. She'll already be using a regulator that's better than most OW students use, and one that could easily go to far beyond anything close to recreational depths.

2nd stages are constant volume devices, meaning they pass the same volume of air regardless of depth. The R380 will function about the same at 150ft as it will on the surface. It's the 1st stage that has to work harder to maintain a higher IP as depth increases.

The MK20 may or may not benefit from being upgraded with the MK25's composite piston, depending on which piston is currently in it. There are three generations of MK20 pistons; the middle brass tipped one is terrible. So if yours has one of those, it's worth immediately replacing. The only way to tell for sure is to take the regulator apart. But, a savvy repair tech should be able to get a good idea just from putting an IP gauge on it and watching how responsive the needle is.

As far as which G250, just avoid the G250HP as triggerman says and you'll be fine. Good luck finding an original G250 for $100 though! I think I paid about that for one at least 5 years ago, not in great shape and needing immediate service.

Why all the hate on the HP?
It's exactly the same as the 1st generation 600's.
Yes, it's better to have the metal barrel, but not that much.
My subjective view is there's really no difference between any balanced 2nd stage be it Scubapro, Zeagle, Apeks, Atomic, HOG or IST.

The two smoothest breathing standard shaped regs that have come through my hands have been a G200B and a G250HP.

The composite piston was introduced in Feb 2000; and at about the same time, SP changed the ambient ports from small to large oval. So if you have a Mk20 with the lage oval ports, there's a pretty good chance it's a good one with the composite piston.
