Apologize if this is maybe the wrong forum, but this question came up in the context of a potential business plan with a friend, so ultimately the question is business related.

How big / deep would an indoor dive pool / tank need to be to qualify for the final four checkout dives of an OW certification? We regularly see these done in a 30' deep part of a quarry, so... I've read language from PADI like "larger than a swimming pool" but with the opening of several facilities around the world (Blue Abyss, Y40, Nemo 33, Todi, Dive4Life, Dubai, etc), it seems some of these "pools" far exceed the experience of a quarry.

Anyone hear or know of anything official from certifying agencies that would indicate what size indoor facility would allow for the complete certification process?

For PADI, the answer is no indoor facility could be used for all 4 checkout dives. This is in the instructor manual and they also reinforced it in the Q2 2022 Training Bulletin (this is a newsletter all paid up PADI DMs and up receive to communicate changes, additions or FAQs from the standards).
PADI calls them: 'very large aquariums and specifcally-constructed environments designed for recreational diving' and the following courses/course segments can be done there:
  • Discover Scuba Diving dives
  • PADI Scuba Diver dives
  • Open Water Diver course Dives 1 and 2
  • Specialty course dives that have an Open Water Diver prerequisite

Thanks! Very helpful answer.
