Indonesia Denies NGO Allegations Of Dolphin, Whale Hunting | The Jakarta Globe

The picture in the article shows villagers butchering a killer whale. I have a hard time grasping the concept of a apex and intelligent animal such as a killer whale which lives in pods being hunted by villagers in small boats. I have this feeling that this killer whale washed ashore sick, then was butchered.

What do you think?

Today whaling is done with powerful ships and explosive harpoons, but that's just the latest technology. Rowboats and hand-thrown harpoon are quite practical for killing even much larger whales than orcas, and many fortunes were made whaling that way in the early days of this country.
