My Tachyon head-cam bit the dust and I need a new video camera.

What I use my video camera for are the following:

1) to record scuba lessons, both in the pool and in OW to use for giving feedback to my students
2) to record dives up to about 50m
3) to record wreck dives so I can look through it after the fact for details I can use for planning future dives and/or doing research

What I want it to have:

1) hands free operation. I want to be able to turn it on at the beginning of the dive and pretty much forget it and then turn it off at the end of the dive.

2) it needs to be able to mount on top of my greenforce light head which is on a goodman grip for wreck diving. That light head produces 1900 lumen so when mounted in that position it has to be able to handle the light output of the dive light without washing out. The problem with the Tachyon was that it could handle up to about 500 lumen without washing out so I needed to mount it on my mask or my backup light for wreck diving which is a pain when you're trying to record details.

3) the mask-strap mount that the Tachyon had is a pain in the patoosh because you see a lot of exhaust bubbles. Mounting either on the shoulder or on the top of the head above the mask is necessary. Basically I need flexible mounting options. Being able to put it on a tripod for in the pool would be nice too.

4) it needs to be able to record about 2 hours of video in one-go with a reasonable resolution. I'm obviously using it as a tool and I'm no videographer and don't pretend to want to be so resolution is not the highest priority as long as it's good enough to display on a computer screen or beamer after the fact.

5) it needs to record in a format I can work with with a cheap editor on a Windows PC

6) it obviously needs to be waterproof in the normal range I dive in which is up to about 50m. If it's good to 100m that's ok but I don't want to pay a bunch of money for a housing that can go to the bottom of the Mariana Trench. What finally killed the Tachyon was a dive to 50m (I think). It didn't flood and it actually recorded the dive but something in the electronics broke and after I changed the batteries it wouldn't turn on anymore... so the housing has to be OK but not amazing. The Tachyon was only rated to 30m I think so it's not their fault. I know.

7) batteries need to be able to keep it running in 4C water for 2 hours. Rechargeable.

8) the smaller the better. It can't be in the way.

Is there anything on the market that even comes close to this? I could really use some advice so thanks in advance for any suggestions.

GoPro Hero 2 Outdoor Edition should meet your needs! I use it for a lot of the same things! You will need to get the GoPro Hero 2 Dive Housing.

I also recommend these 2 accessories:
Backscatter Flip-Up Magic Filter
GoPro Hero 2 Rechargeable li Ion Battery or GoPro Hero 2 Battery Bacpac

I personally use the GoPro Hero 2 LCD Bacpac with the Light & Motion GoPro Action Camera Kit. This setup insures that I get the shot that I want especially when it comes down to giving good feedback to my students. The bigger battery does not work with the LCD Bacpac. I shut off the camera when I am not using it and conserve battery power that way. I also have the extra battery that I swap out in between dives if I need to.

Yup. What he^ said.

Wayne,

Thanks for your quick response. It's hard to see by the pictures how big it is. Can you give me a rough idea?

Cancel that. I found their website.

It looks perfect.

Is there anything else on the market comparable to this right now?

GoPro competition:

Contour | Products | Contour Plus 2

Sport HD | Intova It's discussed here: http://www.scubaboard.com/forums/underwater-videography/417764-intova-sport-pro.html

Sartek HD Sport Buddy

Sony just released a new one. Actually starts shipping tomorrow - Action Cam | Mountable Full HD Action Camcorder | Sony USA
Looks like pretty direct competition for the GoPro.

When the Hero first came out the port wasn't flat on their housing so it wasn't sharp u/w. They've since corrected it with their new housing, so have other mfr's of 3rd party Hero housings. One would hope that Sony didn't make the same mistake. They're all discussed in the GoPro Video forum.

I indicate GoPro housing mfr's in the video housing list also - not updated since 4/12 so there might be other options now.

In case you did want to go to 100M, Sartek makes 2 GoPro housings, one is good to 750'. All the others are good to 60M. Except the Sartek is to 80M.

One advantage to GoPro or Intova is the back monitor.

Don't ask me any questions, this isn't my area of expertise...:D

Gopro Hero2 I use it for commercials and diving. Great customer service, great product. Only way to go in the price range as well

The gopro is roughly a 3"x3"x3" cube with dive housing and extension pack for battery or LCD backpac. I would highly suggest the battery pack extension if you need the 2 hours run time.

I would stick with the GoPro! Put a 32g SD Card in and you are set plus there are so many accessory options at a fair price that you can get in the future if you don't want to do it right now!

I'm almost sold. On the up side I liked the format and the multitude of mounting options as well as the 60m housing and the fact that they're specifically marketing to divers, which means they're thinking about it.

The Sony housing mentioned above didn't look very inspiring although Sony is a brand that I would trust to make a good camera. The Contour's watertight housing came across as a complete afterthought so I rejected that one right off the cuff.

I got to Googling last night and didn't find anything I liked better. It looks like there's a lot out there on the upper part of the market and a fair amount of junk that would probably leak in the shower after you use it for a while.

I want to check out some more of the links in Steve's post but I'm at 90% on the GoPro. Strangely, because it's Chinese and it has a stupid name it makes me wonder how good the actual camera is. The name makes it sound like a toy. That's the main doubt I still have... as well as finding somewhere to buy one since I live in Holland and I've never seen one in a store here.
