Does it make sense to do some experiments in a pool before ocean diving?

In other words does positioning of weight pouch locations and proportioning of weight distribution still transfer although the total weight itself will have to be adjusted for salt?

All gear including exposure (boardshorts and rashguard) will be the same.
 
Yes. The only difference is that you will need roughly 3% more total weight for salt water.

To head off any confusion, that "total" is EVERYTHING and it's dry weight: you, tank, lead, etc. A 210 lb diver, 35 lb tank, 15 lb lead + misc is around 260 lbs, so would add about 7 lbs for salt.

If you get your trim good in fresh water, adding the extra at the waist shouldn't mess it up terribly. Fine tune position as needed.
