In my dream the other night, my sons and I were taking our surface interval. We were ready to dive again and I couldn’t find my gear. Nobody saw my bc. I looked around and found a bc but I wasn’t sure it was mind.

So then I woke up and started to think about my dream. Because I am a football fan this popped into my head in the middle of the night. Why don’t all scuba divers have their names on the back of their bc’s? I mean in big letters that can be read underwater and from about 6 ft away.

I could think of 3 advantages to doing this.

1. It you help everyone keep track of there gear. On a crowded dive boat, if gear was marked, stuff would more easily be filtered to the owner.

2. It would help keep track of your buddy. Over in Hawaii I was diving on a wreck and there was 4 other dive boats on the same site. The person with whom I was buddied I met for the first time during the pre-dive. With everyone wearing basic black it was hard to keep track of her.

3. Most people you meet while diving are friendly. Having their name available would help break the ice and promote camaraderie.

What do you all think of this idea? I don’t know how you would attach names to the back of a bc. But there must be away.

....funny how your mind works when you are asleep. Funny too how everyone looks alike when clad in black scuba suits.

When I get on the dive boat after a dive, the first thing I do is rig my backplate/wings on the next tank. That way I know where my rig is, and that everything is ready to go.

The idea of a name is a good one, I think. Especially when you are dealing with a first time buddy in among a mob of divers. I HAVE put my name and phone number on each of my tanks, in large black letters on a white background (1/2" letters) so I can identify my tanks when they are in a group at a dive shop somewhere. Don't know how I would go about putting a large name on my rig other than that....

If we were named and numbered we could also be called for penalties.
Just think of the penalty minutes accumulated by some of the divers you've seen.

What are penalty minutes for SCUBA?

I and my buddies have our names on the bottom of our fins, booties, detachable computers (So we don't end up diving with our buddies comp of the same brand), etc.

I can normally spot my buddies by their configuration underwater, but in low vis it's nice to be able to see a name on the bottom of the fin.

It's also convenient on the boat while going through a pile of fins to make sure that you have yours, and not someone elses, and that they do not have yours. Booties too. Also our dryboxes and other clutter that we have in our mesh bag is clearly marked with our names. Not always required, but it is nice when it is!

Hope this helps.

I think it is a good idea to put names on our gear; but I'm not sure a name on the back of a BC would be seen very well underwater. Names on the bottom of the fins is a good idea.

Or little twinkly lights, like on little kids' shoes.

:D

Happy holidays!

My Guy used to have a circle with an X in the middle of it on his fins. It made him very easy to find. So I would be all for it.
