Improve depth of field for digital macro

while surfing around trying to find ways of hooking up another strobe to my 3040 for macro work without spending over £1000, I came across an article that said if you used a video light along with a strobe your pictures (macro) would be better giving more depth of field. this was due to the digital cameras aperture settings and flash photography.

If you were using program mode or shutter priority it would increase your depth of field by choosing a higher f-stop due to there being more available light (i.e from the vdo light).

If you were shooting in manual it would make no difference as your are manually entering the f-stop setting.

Additionally two light sources increase "depth" in a photograph (sometimes!) rather than depth of field - I am not sure how this works but by having at least two sources of light you can make the photo have a "3d" quality to it rather than a "flat" looking image that is sometimes rendered by cameras.
