I have received a few emails about this from DAN and also a few clubs I associate with:

ALFRED HYPERBARIC SERVICE CHAMBER OUT OF SERVICE

The Recreational and Commercial Diving Industry is advised that The Alfred Hospital's recompression facilities are out of service and will not be available over the Easter period.

This is a result of a system breakdown that has occurred in the hyperbaric chamber at The Alfred and an investigation is currently underway to determine the likely duration of the closure.

Should a diving emergency occur, The Alfred, in conjunction with Ambulance Victoria, will arrange treatment for emergencies as required but this may involve transfer interstate if recompression is indicated.

In the case of a serious diving emergency, divers should, as usual, call "000" and ask for "Ambulance"

For telephone advice in less serious situations, divers can call either:

The Alfred Hospital 9076 2000 (ask for the Diving Doctor on call)
or
The Diver Emergency Service 1800 088 200 (Toll free within Australia)

Divers should review their plans for diving over the Easter period and into next week, and be aware that recompression may not be locally available.

Divers are reminded to dive conservatively and to have plans for emergencies, including having oxygen therapy available for use in case of an emergency pending arrival of ambulance service paramedics. Oxygen can also be useful to minimise risk if decompression is omitted or if symptoms of any sort arise after a dive.

I would be grateful if recipients could forward this alert to any organisations or individuals who are known to be planning diving in the immediate future.

Thank you,

Dr Ian Millar
