Kidding!, I've been on the internet much too long to be insecure about anything posted. I worked for CompuServe in the 80s, so I have been online for awhile. I'm active in a lot of forums and I usually don't do these intro posts, but this is one topic I'm definitely on the lower end of knowledge on this subject, so I thought I would comply and start here.

My main draw to SCUBA beyond watching Sea Hunt in the 60s has come since my wife and I started cruising once a year. I have to imagine there are a few of us cruise line divers here. After a few amazing sites while snorkeling I decided to give scuba a try. We did one of the intro to scuba classes in a local pool. I loved it, my wife not so much.

Money got tight so I didn't pursue certification for quite a while. In 2011 when we cruised the Eastern Caribbean again, I decided to go ahead and sign up for a intro to scuba excursion in St Thomas. I'm glad I had the experience of doing this in a pool once as I flew through the material they presented in the 30 minute boat ride and was much more comfortable with what was happening then some others. I still can't believe there was a Japanese lady in this excursion who couldn't swim at all. I found that odd. Still the 20 minutes or so near Buck Island in St Thomas was a hug hit in my mind and decided before my return to St Thomas next year to get certified so I didn't have to be at the mercy of woman who couldn't swim. They leader towed her around and got tired cutting our excursion short.

Fast forward to 2012 and I completed the coursework and pool work for SDI certification and completed my 4 open water dives in an Central Ohio quarry. As that certification was finishing another student did accidentally punch me in the mouth disloding my regulator so I got to do that drill for real. Now, I'm waiting till May 1st to dive again. Though I suspect sometime this winter I'll go back to the training facility and just go back in the pool with my instructor to refresh my memory.

I suspect being a once a year cruise diver will be all I ever do, but I suspect I'll find things of interest here.

Welcome to diving, and to :sblogo:!

I don't normally read all the Intros, but you had such a catchy title . . .

I think you'll really enjoy being a diver. There are cruises to a lot of places with good diving, and there are some reports of those dives here that might help you decide where you want to cruise. In addition, I can add a couple of tips -- if there are ports of call where you might want to dive and there is no ship excursion, you CAN contact local dive operators and arrange diving, but you do have to be careful of the ship's timetable. In addition, arranging your own diving can be considerably cheaper than the diving through the ship.

Have fun, and who knows? You might get more hooked than you think . . . a lot of us did!

Thanks. I've already been corresponding with the COKI Dive Center at Coki Beach St Thomas. They do seem to have experience with cruise line passengers as he already knew the arrival time of our ship and mentioned how that he could accomodate that. I'm not settled as to this being the place, but its on top of the list so far.

Welcome. St Thomas has some nice diving, but I can't speak for quarries in Central Ohio.

Be warned though - scuba is highly habit forming.

Got certified in 2001 while on vacation. Started cruising and diving on each cruise. Figured I'd go diving once a year on vacation. Around 2006 I start getting pretty good at it and decide I want to do it more than once a year. Cannot afford to go to Caribbean twice a year. So I take up diving locally. AOW, Wreck diving, Rescue Diver, Divemaster. Used to say anyone who goes ice diving must be nuts. I'm thinking if I start ice diving I double my dive season. I'm officially nuts. This could be you too. :)

Since OSU can't go to a bowl game this year...I will be friendly and stop to say hello. Welcome to SB!

Welcome to "The Board"!!!
There is a wealth of information here.

This is an old wives tale and is not true at all...in fact I know some guys that
have been diving regularly for over 20 years and they ain't addicted.....
Can't help but admit to the allure of just one more piece of new gear. LOL

Welcome to Diving! I second what TSandM said about the catchy title making people want to open up this thread...

I also agree with the others on "you may just find yourself far more hooked than you imagined". My husband, son, and I are all divers and love it so much we've decided to downsize life on land and liveaboard a boat full-time so that we can travel the world and dive anywhere and anytime we want! You can follow our story if you want at www.divingintocruising.com I can honestly say that "Diving" is more addicting than anything I've ever tried...and I've tried lots;)

The first stage is admitting to yourself that you have a problem... ;)

Welcome to ScubaBoard and diving!

You will find that as you progress on your new addiction (err...hobby:D) that SB is a wonderful community to learn from and to share your diving thoughts with.
