After buying my mask, fins and snorkel and having my first PADI class last night I am hooked. I had done discover scuba before but it had been a year and a half since then and I forgot how amazing it was to breath underwater. I am really looking forward to my next class! I have a feeling this sport is going to be burning some new holes in my pockets in the years to come...

Welcome aboard. And while you're buying gear, don't forget a good cutting tool in case you really get hooked. :D

welcome to the forum. I don't post very often but find this an amazing source of good advice and information. You are right to be hooked - it is a fantastic hobby/sport and highly addictive IMHO:D Enjoy the rest of your course.

It took about the same length of time to get hooked. If you makes you feel a little better, I bought an entire set of new gear at the same point you bought mask fins and snorkel. I am sure that soon enough you will add a bcd, regulator, computer, exposure suit, light, etc etc. If you have to be hooked on something, LET IT BE SCUBA!

Welcome, I know the feeling of being hooked and I have it bad. I hope you enjoy the rest of the course as much because if you do, once you're certified you'll love it all the more. Happy diving.

Glad you are enjoying it! I warn you though, the addiction will only get worse and soon you will enter a black hole from which there is no escape! One set of gear will lead you to buy another and then another and the cycle will never end. :-) I started out as an open water diver. Fish and coral reefs were enough for me. Then I started diving in our freshwater springs and noticed the very enticing caverns and caves. This led to me getting my cavern certification and subsequentially all the equipment I will need for cave. :-)

I didn't get completely hooked until the first ocean dive. But then it was pretty amazing. It only gets better. Glad that you have found a passion for diving as well.

SCUBA is very good addiction!
Good Luck & Good Diving.

Thanks everyone for the warm welcome. Indeed this is a slippery slope, after buying my mask fins and snorkel I just kept looking online at more things I could buy. I know I will learn a lot during my classes and look forward to learning more on this forum.

Welcome to the sport:) I know the feeling of being hooked very well. It does tend to get a bit expensive...but there are much worse habits to have! The folks here in these forums are great sources of info, but be sure to connect with a local dive shop so that you can see, feel and touch things. Many LDS's will also let you "try before you buy", which is a great way to get a sense of a particular piece of equipment's feel when you are actually using it. The better local dive shops will also stand behind what they sell, which can be important. If you want to save some money and also get a sense of what you may like, used equipment (as long as it is well-maintained) is a good choice. I have had a good deal of luck buying from folks on this site. If you do that, be sure to find a dive equipment "Rabbi" that can give you some advice on what to look for when you are buying used gear. In many cases, local dive clubs are great sources for these kinds of mentors. Best of luck with your newest passion!
