I know it had been a lot of discussions about SAC, but...

Last saturday I went reef diving to Cozumel (palancar) with my brother, and of course some other guys that we met on the boat that day, no one is gue or DIR oriented as I am, there was a guy maybe on his 65 years old with a big belly, out of shape, and the guy took 3 beers while the boat was reaching the site, once we were in the water I saw him on a feetdown position most of the time, since my brother was shooting his camera I use to follow him, we never went more than 25 meters deep, and then when I turned to see the other people I saw this guy 145 feet deep, I signaled to the guide about but he just say it was ok, Never tried to go down but keep on watching this guy, after 7 min he started an ascent with some deco stops, after 35 min I reached my min air and my brother and me started min deco, my dive lasted 41 min with an average depth of 23 m, once in the surface we waited 10 min to see the guide surfacing, and we spend another 30 min to wait to these guy that stayed solo on the water making a total of 92 min with just an al 80, I never thought I could see something like these!!

Did I say that he just had a lykra suit, no neoprene

How is that possible???!!! 92 min!!!??? spending 7 min at 145 feet??? with 3 beers on???
Looks like this smashed everything I had learn....Any thoughts???
Do I have so bad consumption??

Was his name "Big Daddy"?

Lots of old guys that are out there that are relaxed.

Why is this in the DIR forum?

I wanna know his secret!!

I think the OP put it here because he feels as though someone violating many of the principles he's been taught shouldn't be able to do this.

But my bet would be that, if one had observed this man, one would see that he probably had very good buoyancy control and didn't move much, and when he did, it was to a purpose. He may also have been skip breathing, which is a technique some people use to extend their gas at the cost of tolerating elevated pCO2s.

One of my regular dive buddies is a somewhat overweight, good-sized man, and his SAC rate is the same as mine. It amazes me over and over again, but it's clearly due to his extreme efficiency in the water.

You're right lynne
why I post it on DIR forum? cause I wanted to know the opinion of the DIR community but it doesn't matter
I think is gonna be difficult for everyone explain the profile of this guy

Why? There are plenty of divers that have been diving for years and years and years that don't dive DIR. There are plenty of freakin' awesome divers that don't dive DIR.

who knows what his secret is....it's possible that old, out of shape, beer swilling, DIR reject is a retired USN Master Chief diver who's been diving for 40+ years and thousands of dives....he's probably still living on the edge like he's always done and plans on checking out the same way...biggest thing he's worrying about underwater is trying to remember where he put his car keys

would I suggest anybody dive the same way?...nope
would I have taken the time to ask him for some advice?..you betcha
you may not approve of his technique or his methods or even have to accept his advice, but it's just possible that he may of imparted a nugget of wisdom that would be priceless to you
