Any thoughts or impressions on these two WA lenses for the A570? I'm trying to decide which one to buy. There's lots of info out there on the Inon lenses, but not much for the W-20.

First of all, what housing you're using?

If you're using Canon's underwater housing, you need to get this mount here in order to use the wide angle lens, and the only lens you can use is the UWL-105AD.

If your housing is Ikelite, then you can use any 67mm threaded lens. It can be the W-20, the UWL-100, or any 67mm threaded underwater lens.

So pretty much it hinges down to your housing.

Yeah, I'm still deciding what housing to buy too. I had an A570 w/ the Canon housing that met an unfortunate demise, so I bought another A570 off Ebay. I'm looking at the different housing/lens combinations now.

I was just curious if anyone had any experience with the Ikelite W-20 compared to the Inon WA lenses.

I would get the Inon because if you need super wide angle it can be incorporated into the Inon wide angle dome. Plus, just looking at the two side by side the Inon looks better quality. JMO. Assuming the Ike housing, if you get the Canon housing that is another matter, you should get the 165 ultra wide angle dome lens. What exactly happened to your other rig?

I clipped it off incorrectly (or not at all) while I wasn't shooting and didn't notice for a few minutes. It's gone. I only got to use it underwater a handful of times. :dork2:

I'm not going to be using a strobe for now due to limited budget. I've read that the WA lens is a nice "first upgrade" to the camera. I've also read that the wet-mount lens can hinder your internal flash. I'd like to avoid this.

So basically, I'm looking for the best housing/lens combo that allows me to use the internal strobe for now.

ETA: I found a blurb on Ikelite's website that basically says if you're using a WA lens, you're only going to be able to use natural light or an external strobe. So I guess now my question is whether the Canon housings have this same issue. Does the diffuser on the AD Bayonet Mount for the Inon lens allow you to use the internal flash with the WA lens?

It will be the same problem like the Ikelite housing. You'll still need an external strobe or natural light in order to use the wide angle lens.

I know the underwater camera equipment is expensive, but what I did was just slowly build it up unless you're dying to have it all at once.

To be completely explicit about the situation, you'll technically be able to use the internal strobe but you're probably going to be extremely disappointed with the results. The wide angle lens will capture much more area than the internal strobe will illuminate. Further, anytime you use the internal strobe, you'll be prone to backscatter.

Thank you to both of you. I guess I'll put off buying the lens until I can can a strobe as well.
