Hey everyone,
I went on two dives this afternoon and have found a perplexing problem... Topside, my camera (Canon T2I/550D) works completely fine in it's ikelite housing. (I'm using the tokina 10-17 with the 8" dome). However, around 20 feet underwater, the camera stops working in Program, TV, AV, & Manual. It appears that the aperture ring closes (the viewfinder image becomes much darker), and then the entire system locks up except for changing shutter speed and aperture (you can't take a picture, review photos, or make any changes to ISO, WB, etc.). In all auto modes (landscape, macro, portrait, full auto) the camera operates fine (shoots pictures, allows review), however there is some message in a black box on the display that reads something about "not being supported in the current mode".

When i rise back up to around 20 feet and shut the camera off and turn it back on again, the problem corrects itself. All manual modes work fine. As soon as i go past about 20 ft, the problem happens again.

This happened on two dives that went to approximately 60 feet. It seems there is no damage to the camera, as it works completely fine topside.

Adding to the confusion is the fact that I did a 100' dive this morning with no problems whatsoever. Only in the past two dives have i had the problem.

Very concerned. Of course there is no way to know it's fixed until I go on another dive. Does anyone have any ideas as to what could have caused this?

Thanks

I have had this happen a few times and usually the culprit is the lens release button. During a dive you can depress the button and release and this usually solves the problem. If this doesn't work then the lens may have never been locked and needs to be reseated on dry land with the dome off.
