Well I just opened up my brand new ikelite rebel xt housing and I found a spring with a hook on one end and a small straight piece of wire on the other end floating around loosely in the housing. Any clue where this is supposed to go? Didn't find any mention of it in the manual. thanks

Ben

Sounds like the shutter release lever return spring. can you take a picture of it and the shutter release from inside the housing?

Yeah, mine fell off too as I was opening the package and poking and prodding at everything. It's pretty easy to get back on if you have small hands. It just sorta slides on and the angled piece of the spring pushes against the outside fo the housing so that the shutter release has some resistance to it.

Here is a picture of the loose spring on white paper and the shutter lever. I saw one of the responses above, but I still don't understand how it is supposed to fit on the shutter release button. Can someone take a picture of their setup? thanks

I'll post a picture later if no one else has in the meantime. Gotta go...

Likewise. That's def the shutter piece though. It looks exactly like mine did, not broken, don't worry. ;-) I'll post a pic tonight from home.

This is the 5d housing, but the part seems to be generally the same. First, find a girl (pardon if you are one, I forgot to check before typing this!) with small dexterous fingers, you'll need them.

Generally, the way that doodad works is the spring wraps around the base of the shutter arm (inside the housing). The blunt end leans against the front wall of the housing, pushing and leveraging off of it, while the hooked end hooks around the corner of the shutter lever. The effect is to squish the spring when you pull the shutter release towards you, giving some resistance. Pretty clever, actually.

Just look at the spring and orient it correctly, then squeeze it a little, and slide it onto the shutter arm. Mine went on fine, but it took me a few tries to get my fingers on it correctly. Actually, a 10 year old might have ideally sized hands for this. Needle nose pliers aren't going to help, the space is too small. You gotta find somebody with good fingers. :D

So here are the pics:

1. Looking into the housing from the back:

2. Same, slightly different angle: http://www.pbase.com/taxgeek/image/62358244

3. From front top. Bottom of picture is the right side of the housing (as viewed from back), top of picture is left.: http://www.pbase.com/taxgeek/image/62358245

Hope this helps.
