Hi all,

Im going to be purchasing a strobe this week and not sure what to go for. At first I was looking no further than the DS51 - great price and seems to meet the specs for what I want, however I dont want to have to fork out for another strobe when my requirements change so started looking at DS125. Now correct me if I am wrong but it seems the DS125 is being phased out for the DS160. Is this correct? The price of a DS125 is a few hundred bananas cheaper than the DS160 though - i the DS 160 worth the bit extra or shall I go for the DS125?

The kit I am looking at is this one:394490 Ikelite Substrobe DS-160 Kit with Sync Cord & Ball & Socket Arm System for Ikelite Housings

Is this everything I need?

Cheers

Lee

I don't see B&H Photo listing the 125 anymore. The 160 head is listed at $800. The one rule in underwater photos is more power, more power.

If you can swing it, get the 160. Later on you can get another 160 or a 50 for fill in.

The DS-160 also has a built-in modelling light. Very handy for night dives or just the hastle of carrying around another light.

The 125 also has a built-in modeling light, but it is incandescent, the new 160 has an LED modeling light. Personally, I bought a pair of 125s since you can find them for 500-600 on ebay as people upgrade to the 160. If you'll be paying full price definitely go for the 160. It's slightly slower to recharge between flashes, but not much.

For the OP,

Eventually you will end up wanting a second strobe - I found that while one was great, I wished I had two. The DS-125 is a GREAT strobe - FAST recycle and TTL capability. I am not yet familiar with the 160 so cannot speak to that one. Good luck :)
