Helloooo

In a dilemma.. I am getting a Canon SD800 IS to replace a lost one, and also getting the strobe and case for it. Im not lookin for a really good strobe, cos I'm just a novice photographer and diver.

The question is, I dunno if I should get the Canon housing or ikelite housing. My ideal setup is the Ikelite Housing, with the SeaLife 960D strobe. But the problem is that the Ike housing does not have a tripod mount in the centre. The mounts are at the side of the case.

Is there a way the SeaLife tray can be mounted on the Ike housing (without D.I.Y drilling)? I've called up stores and asked, and either they are not sure, or give a condescending "yes".

Please, any SeaLife Strobe/Ike housing users out there, I would appreciate ANY input on this..

Thanks!

you could use a fantasea base, I used a 2020 (double base) shown here with a mix of ikelite parts

this shows the base, and the fantsea mount (on the right) the discoloration on the left is where I had used an Ikelite arm (from an older SLR setup) you can see all the slots in the center, the ikelite housing I have (a640) lines up with them, I've also used it with a canon housing (s70), the discoloration in the middle is where the canon was attached.

this is a blowup of the fantasea arm mount, not sure if the sealife will mount directly to it or not.

this is how i drilled the base to mount the ikelite arms

your strobe might be able to mount directly to one of their arms which are pretty inexpensive

The Canon case works quite well with the SL960D.

You will have to do some engineering to get the Ike case on the SL960D.

You will have to take the SL960D apart to make anything work, unless you createa bracket that attaches to the two holes in the Ike case and then attaches to the single hole in the SL960D.

I am sure it can be done, but why? The Canon case works perfectly well.

BTW: I have an A620 in a Canon case with the SL960D and an A640 in an Ike case with an Ike strobe.

Make sure you get or make a diffuser with the SL960D as it can be very bright!!!

Oh ok.. Thanks! Is it possible if I drill 2 holes in the tray of the SL960D, to fit it to the Ike case? I heard a lot of good things about the Ike housing, and i really wanna get it. I've used the Canon case b4, and I dunno if it's as sturdy as the Ike one...

Also, is the SL960D strobe an ok strobe for beginners like myself? I wanna try photography out, before deciding if I wanna get into it hardcore... And if its not too much of a problem for u, could you show me how the tray of the SL960D looks like? Can't find any pictures online. Sorry to bother, but could you tell me if the screw diameters are the same for the tray of the SL960D and the Ike casing, albeit being off centre? Thanks! Wanna know if drilling is a possible option, of in fact, just mounting it slightly off to the left...

Thanks again!

I am not certain that the screws will work on both. You can use one that is designed for the Ike case on the SL960D. That will not be a problem.

You should not have any problem drilling out the SL960D tray. It is a hard plastic. You would need to be careful as it has a few cross members on the bottom for strength. You may have to cut one to get the screw to fir right.

The SL960D is fine for a beginner to me.

The Canon case is not as sturdy as the Ike case. Both have complete functionality of the camera. Neither is bad and neither is great compared to the other, in my opinion.

You can make the Ike work on the SL960D.

Remember to get the diffuser as the SL960D is bright and can wash out some photos if you are not careful.

I have the same problem. So I should drill 2 holes into the SL-960 tray? What size is that? Also how do I get the screws that will screw into the holes on the Ikelite case?
