We're considering a Turks & Caicos liveaboard for April or May '09. Not sure whether Explorer Ventures or Aggressor, the two major outfits with boats there. Trip would be out of Provo. If you've done this trip, with either operator, what are your opinions? If you've posted a report, can you link to it? What about a comparison to other Caribbean diving you have done, or any other areas you would compare it to? What time of year were you aboard? What about shark & big ray sightings? Anything you considered a big negative?

Thanks for any thoughts!

there have been a few trip reports this past year down on the Liveaboards Forum. Check those out.

A ScubaBoard Staff Message...

Moved to Liveaboards...

I did the T&C Aggressor last October and would highly recommend them. The boat was nice, the crew was great and the food was excellent. I thought the diving in the Caymans was slightly better but it's still very good in the Turks and Caicos.

I have been on a live aboard in Prov in October of 2000. We had a great time and enjoyed a lot of great wall diving. I would recommend advanced certification because most of the diving is deep as I recall. I was on board a Peter Hughes vessel that has since been sold to Explore Ventures and now is in St. kitts I believe. The diving was great and I recall feeling completely alone for an entire week. We did not see another boat with the exception of an ocean going trawler the entire week. There was a “shark dive” at French Cay but I do not recall it as being that spectacular. Other than the fact that there were four sharks circling the dive platform when we were going to giant stride in. We did not see anything really big, but I do remember seeing several eagle rays on the trip. I can not think of anything negative to say about the trip. I have also been to Provo for a land based long weekend with my wife two years ago. We dove with Caicos Adventures and had a great time with them as well. The diving is mostly wall diving and compares to Cayman diving in my opinion. My wife and I have booked a trip on the T&C Explorer II for this October and I will try and get a review in on the Scuba board for everyone, because we had a hard time finding anyone with opinions on the liveaboards in that area.

My wife and I sail with the Explorer on the 21st so we'll let you know when we return. It's close now and we're getting excited and are more than ready to go.

We went with Explorer Ventures in October 2006. This was our first liveaboard and I was very concerned about safety. They were very safety conscious and attentive. I think back now on how scared I was to do a liveaboard and now you can't get me off of them, so they must have done something right.

Thanks peeps; I'll be watching for those reports. Any more out there with experience on liveaboards out of Provo? I think I have a fair idea of the boats ... whould love to hear more comparisons of the diving to other areas, etc.
