Could any of you expert members help me out with the identification of this Starfish.
Photo was taken on the Great Barrier Reef (Australia) I have been through my limited supply of text books, but to no avail.
Would appreciate some help in this matter.

Fergyjohn,

I scoured my library and could come up with nothing definitive. However, after close inspection, I came to think that it could be a Cushion Sea Star that had been to a Richard Simmon Wt. Reduction Class and finally got some definition in its arms...

But it will be fun to see if someone has a better library or memory than mine (The latter is not much of a challange!).

Joewr...

"Coral Reef Animals of the Indo-Pacific" that starfish is commonly called Choriaster granulatus (if that tells you anything!) It was discovered in 1869, and is found in East Africa, Australia, Solomon Islands, New Guinea, Philippines and Guam.

I just call it "the starfish that kinda looks like a toasted marshmellow" and people know what I'm talking about. :)

Thankyou Scubabunny much appreciated, I am hoping Santa will bring me some new books this Xmas.

fergy :)

That starfish's nickname must be stubby! Or maybe only the tips of the arms are edible so he has been munched on once or twice!

Fergyjohn...I found this one that's sort of close...Sea Star

You might want to check out this ID site. I'm always amazed at the stuff I find there!

Pacific Creatures

I think the name should be Doughboy Starfish :)
