I had a great time! We were down in La Jolla, San Diego. Other that the fact that the BCD I rented let my tank come loose and we couldn't get it secured properly. Anyway, I didn't catch anything that was big enough to bring home but my (experianced) dive budy let me have one of the two he caught. I took some of the advice I've read in other post about catching anything that you see. That way you can get some practice for the big ones when you have the chance. I can't wait to go again. Next time I want to bring an extra tank so I can go bugging at night and spear fishing in the morning.

Last week I spoke with a guy at work that had a couple of dive sticker on his clipboard. As it turns out he's a diver and he just bought a boat! My dive network is groing.:D

Try wetting the tank strap before cinching it tight. That should keep it from coming loose.

Make sure you have a current Cal fishing license and a measuring device. Check out the underwater hunting forum for lobster tips. Good Hunting.

You might want to re-think taking anything you see. If you grab undersized bugs and then release them with broken antenae, they're probably not going to live much longer anyway since a lobster's antenae are one of their main defenses. Also, the younger ones aren't as quick (or wary?) as the bigger ones, so you're not really getting as much practice as you think.

Thanks for the advice rjm60. I'll work harder on the bigger bugs.

WetDawg, we were just south of the UW park. I don't know if I'd consider it a hot spot. I'm don't have enough exeriance bugging yet.

That sounds like such a blast... Any chance you could persuade a few lobster to migrate a ways North?

I really enjoy harvesting the crab around here, in season, but IMHO, they don't compare with lobster.

Happy hunting,

Steve

You were probably diving Casa Cove - just south of the Childrens Pool ( where all the sea lions hang out.) It's a good spot but usually lobstered out within a week or so of the start of the season because the entry is so easy. All the reports I've heard, and my own experience, have the lobster is fairly shallow water this year. I've got some two pounders in as little as 8 ft.
