I was certified about 2 years ago, and had a REALLY bad experience with the instructor and course itself I have always wanted to scuba dive and still want to even more. The problem is the only dive shop in the area is the one I used in Southwestern Michigan/South Bend area. I wonder if I could find a shop that I could take a refresher course from and also I am new to the area I live and don't know anyone that dives to have a dive buddy with and my wife hates water. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Try a scuba review class. Not sure if you moved, or were going to the same shop you had the bad exp with, but don't worry, just find a new one you jive with, maybe the guy dosen't even work there anymore if it was 2 years ago

Sorry to hear about the bad experience. It is good to think of a refresher.
Maybe you may want to try a couple of easy dives with an experienced group, if that is the only dive shop around.

I am sorry to hear you had a problem. When I started diving I too had a problem with the dive shop I started with, now I drive 45 minutes to get to my dive shop and it is worth it. Don't give up you can work it out.

I dont live within an hour of any dive shops though I hear one is opening nearby. One can only hope. I certainly understand living in places where the LDS as it is often described here doesn't exist. As someone else mentioned if you can find a welcoming group, check out the forum for your area on here, search the web for dive clubs in your area, etc. then see if you can tag along on an easy dive with some experienced folks. The refresher is a great idea and important, but you can get in the water without it if you can find the right group. Just be honest with them about your experience level and situation. They may be able to lead you to better options.

There are some good dive shops further north in the grand rapids area. I would like to recomend Adventures in Diving that is in holland. Peggy is a sweatheart. I work at a shop in Grand Rapids but that is a long haul. I am certain you would be happy with Adventures though!
