My Biology teacher told our class that the you can send a request for funds to fund for something for research or for a school. My teacher said that he had requested for funding for a new board that was touch screen for our classroom. He got a letter back saying that he was not going to get any funds. He read on the news that the Government Gave funds to a researcer that was trying to find out If most seals were left handed or right handed. Thir researcher was given over 1 million dollars for this experiment. Wat I don't understand is that they will give over a million dollars to find out wether seals use there right hand more or their left hand, and would not donate less than 7 thounsand dollars for a new board for a room.

I liked it better when our Gov spent $250.000 for a claw hammer Those where the days or a mere $300.000 for a toilet seat. I'm sorry to be so silly but i dont get it either. somebodies pocket is getting full for shure!

Well, there is a lesson here...

It would seem that you are being given the message that you needed to include that you would investigate whether whales were affected by sonar(or something just as interesting...), and include a new board in the proposal....Then, hire someone else to do the research and keep the board.

(This is a joke.....Humor...Please don't actually do this....LOL)

Yes, part of the lesson is to have a topic that is politically correct in scope. Another part of the lesson is to ask for a LOT of $$$. This implies that people will be employed, resources will be utilized, an impact will be made on at least the local economy, and the applicant thinks on a grand scale.

Too bad you don't have Lobbyists...

Looks like next week Pres Bush will announce a manned mission to Mars which will cost 100s of Billions to see son red rock first hand.

Mars mission speculation

What odds do you have for a great learning tool for your school, when government leaders choose to go for glitz, smoke and mirrors.

The same amount of money could probably eliminate the worlds dependence on fossil fuels controlled by crackpots in the middle east.

(this is probably a bit of a thread hijack...but it was the first thing that came to mind...good luck)

if you think the 1 mil is a lot what do you suppose will be asked for next once they find out. or worse yet what if they are ambio.

tree huggers and the like..... ba humbug.

I don't want to get into the odd ways of the government or political correctness, but relating a research grant with an educational one is like comparing apples and oranges. I would also like to know which "funding agency" your biology teacher is referring to. Education and research are usually exclusive. Also, big money grants are separated from small money ones.

Educational grants tend to be submitted more often than research ones, so the competition is more fierce. An educational proposal also has to argue why the requested funds can't be aquired by the school, whereas research money stems predominantly from grants.

Educational funds granted by agencies that also give research grants typically expect something novel and "research-oriented". With the example of touch screens, one would need to argue how no one else has done it before, and/or establish valid measurements as to how these touch screens benefit the educational program. This is "educational research".

I'm not sure you need "a new board that was touch screen," but it is obvious you do need educational resources and you need them right away.
