Just back from vacation. Did my book, pool work and test before I went and using the Universal Rererral letter did my 4 open water dives on my cruise. I did 2 beach dives in St Thomas which went very well then did 2 boat dives in Barbados. The first boat dive went very well and the 2nd one did OK till almost the end. I dont know what happened, but I floated way up and no matter how hard I tried could not get back down. I did not add any air to the BC. He said other than that I was almost perfect. It was a BLAST!

Welcome to your addiction - and you are in great company. :)

Congratulations! Welcome to the wonderful world of SCUBA diving! On your last dive, I bet that you were diving aluminium, and if so, as you used more air/you became more boyant. It has happened to all of us.

Be Well,

What happens is you breath the air in the tank and it get lighter. The air inside a full tank weights about 6 pounds. What you need to do is weight yourself so that you can still stay under even in the worst case, which would be at your 15 foot saftey stop with a nearly empty tank. I'd say you should have had about 2 more pounds of lead on you.

This happened to me on my first dive after my OW class. I bought my own tank (steel LP80) and was weighted only enough to get me down with a full tank. After using the air I floated up. If this happens again look for some rocks to stuff into the BC pocket. and then add weight next dive.

Now what you need to do is get hooked up with the local dive comunity near where you live. Get to know the locals and dive with them. There are likely some dive clubs in your area. That OW c-card is really a "learner's permit"
