Well, the news just never ceases to amaze me. Tonight the top story is about the damaged houses with "blue roofs" and/or other damages. Thats right, with recent cold fronts these folks are now having to deal with the cooler weather seeping its way in pulling house temps down to the 40's at night and into the 30's this week. Ah well, with out the creature comforts of AC and Heat on these homes, they have a taste of how I lived my early years as a kid around here. :)

It's crazy that we're still dealing with all this stuff. I don't know how it is over there, but here I've noticed people are just a little nicer, a little more patient, a little more generous to others this time of the year. I hope it all lasts for a while longer.

Might be gone by the time the next storm season comes around ;)

Over here most of the snow birds have returned, you know, the part time residents who are clueless about how nice it is without the stores being packed with people buying Depends, cheap wine and beer, and the variety of other things our Sr Citizens imbibe upon. You can tell em because they are the ones slowing down to look at damaged buildings and blue roofs or the areas where buildings used to be.. or gawking at the new signs. My favorite thing to do is explain to them how loud the wind was, how much debris was around and how there were NO signs, lights, power, etc., how we cooked on grills, ate food as it thawed and lived in SWFL in 98 degree temperature in mid summer with no AC! Anyway, enough of that...

The area is..well.. lets say I'm calling our local economy 'a business a day goes away'. We're able to get right onto and down the beach without sitting in traffice 45m...60m...90m....120m! as is normal for this time of year. The same for leaving the beach to come home. The tourist traffic which drives the economy around here during the winter time is practically nothing.

In speaking with folks here (hmm, Colin can you imagine me ever not talking to people?!) I've been informed that there is still a huge shortage of roofing materials, aluminum for those ever so faddish pool enclosures, and more than anything a shortage in people who are skilled in these trades to keep up with the demand which is there.

I seriously doubt that the damages will be repaired by next hurricane season. If the next 10-20 are as the "experts" predict it to be, there will be a lot more of this to come. I'll say it once and probably a lot more - I'm glad I'm stepping out of technology as my primary source to look to for income and am going to align myself more with what makes the local market function. :)

I guess it is a trade off then, up north you deal with the snow and tornadoes. Down there you guys deal with tropicals and hurricanes.....Is there a happy median anywhere?

Maybe you should become a general contractor, roofer or screen fitter - plenty of business until close to retirement age!!

DMP - Actually, I'll take the hurricanes, tornadoes, heat, storms, etc., over cold and grey anyday. I spent part of a Winter in IN and while it was neat to watch the season change, snow, X-mas time with friends vs. family, the cold damp made my joints ache something aweful! Technically, with all our diving and overall good weather the majority of the time, it is the happiest medium you can find.. even if the snowbirds and tourists (strangely missing this year..hmmmm) do insist on invading for part of the year. :)

Simon - there is absolutely no way I would ever wish the pains of being a GC on myself. Heart disease runs in my family and putting myself in a position of stress would only accelerate the inevitable. Not to mention those guys are having a hard time right now.

Incidentally - the news showcased an issue down here thats got people all in a tizzy. One of our largest homebuilders in the area, MasterCraft homes, is behind on 60 homes that they are currently contracted on. Some homes haven't even been started, one is 20% complete and the folks who were supposed to move into it had sold their home, left their jobs, and moved from CT to here to finalize the paperwork on the new house they were told was going to be done when they got down here. MANY stories like this have been showcased this week. Gabby me even talked to someone at Lowes who was in the plant section getting some low maintenance plants to decorate the duplex they rented because the house they had being built wasn't even started.

I hate to say it, but we are only now just starting to see the effects of what a hurricane can do to an area.
