Hunkering down suggestions

Hi PPDers,

I'm planning on heading to the Philippines for a few months to rent this (2007) winter. I'm looking for a location with good local free-diving, and is close enough to good dive sites for easy multi-day diving forays.

I know vague: but with over 7000 islands to choose from, I could use a few starting points.

a few months? set up base in cebu or bohol where there are a lot of good dive sites. once you've had your fill in either locations, you can simply take a ferry to dumaguete for dauin/apo island or to leyte's sogod bay.

puerto galera would be a good option if you'll be staying more than a week. it's about 2 hrs drive from manila to batangas then 1 hour ferry from batangas pier. the place has sites for whatever type of diving you would want and offers stuff to do topside as well. from there you could easily dive anilao and verde island across the channel.

dive ops there also offer dive trips to other sites of interest beyond puerto galera (pg for short). renting a place to stay is possible just ask the dive ops for assistance.

Jonix and Jigo have great suggestions. Kevin aka 415Gem has stayed in multiplaces around the PI for extended periods so you should search for his posts. He has some good tips. Here's a good one about his stay in Bohol:

In Puerto Galera I met a girl from the Netherlands who was there for 4 months doing her DM internship. Stayed at Sunsplash resort.
