Hi there. I've been with SB since October last year. I live here in Jeddah, where I teach English as a Foreign language to officers in the Saudi Air Defense Forces. My wife and two kids had to evacuate last June due to Raytheon's fear of terrorist incidents, like the one that just happened in Al Khobar. Being a geographical bachelor, I have not been the most motivated weight loser there is. Before my wife left, I weighed 104 kg (and I'm 6'). I couldn't fit into some of my pants from when we got married, my wedding tux didn't fit, and I had to put my wedding ring on my pinky finger. Anyway, I managed to lose some weight, down to 96kg. When they left, there was no one on Fridge Patrol, and the calories were so accessible. Feeling down also tends to "feed" eating more, no?

Well, my weight went back up, and maxed out at 102 kg. Finally, last month, I actually managed to overcome my fridge sorties and cut out most fats and carbs. I am not an Atkins fanatic, but I have been avoiding bread, fatty foods and other foods high in sugar/carbs. I have managed to get back down to 96 kg. One extra reason is that I avoid eating at the compound restaurant. The daily specials are tasty, but fattening. Maybe chef salad or mostly protein platter once in a while. I've cut out the usual M & M ice cream and other quick and easy sweets, having instead an apple or the like. I need to try getting into the habit of going to the gym, which means overcoming my mental/physical inertia. Once there, I'm o.k., as long as there aren't a bunch of body builders pumping 200 lbs.

I could use all the encouragement I can get. It's not a matter of can't workout, it's won't. I can be such a couch potato. Thanks and hope I haven't bored anyone. I'll try to mix a bit of daily life here with my journals. Ciao.

HI Aquanaut!
Great to have you aboard. You didn't bore me at all. I think it helps all of us to hear each other's stories.
We're have for you! Stay focused. You'll feel so much better.

Maybe others will join in this thread with their stories!

Hey Aquanaut - welcome - saw your post on another thread about westerners getting together in SA.... stay safe out there

I also had to cut the ice cream out - WAAAAAHHHH! Actually eating these little Tofu ice cream bars (about 1/4 size). At first I thought "you gotta be kidding me!" but I've gotten to actually like them :-)

I also find it harder for some reason to take better care of myself when my wife is out of town.....

Take care

Chris

I weigh in at 235 pounds (106 kg) and I do just fine. I never have trouble keeping up with the most fit divers in the roughest of conditions. Now - I do get regular physicals and get my bloodwork done once a year (oddly enough I don't eat red meat or pork and am on the Atkins Diet but my Cholesterol and Triglyceride levels are excellent). Oh - and I don't smoke.

I don't burn through gas either.

I also don't eat a whole lot - I track my calories at between 2000 and 2500 a day (ok - I could eat less and when I do I lose weight) but I am active via skiing/snowboarding/mountain biking/hiking/scuba. I'm 33.

The only thing I have ever had a problem with, and I am not sure that it's related to my fitness or not, is that since I was a kid I never liked getting water in my eyes. Ok - now the scuba board may laugh - and I had trouble doing the laps when I first went for my OW. But I kicked through it and haven't had a problem since.

I have come to be accepting of my body type (but I don't want to gain MORE weight) and yes it's kind of embarrasing trying to get into/out of that wetsuit. It's especially embarrasing when I get starred at by the rest of the divers on the cattle boat as I am almost always the biggest guy on the boat, but you leanr to love the sport and not let that bother you. In fact I make it a point NOT to cover up during SI's (unless it's cold ov course) to show that I am NOT going to be embarrased.

I thought it would be good marketing to have dive trips for people over certain BMI's.

Go Diving! Get that cert!

Welcome Jeddah and congratulations on your losses so far. We've all been where you are now and totally understand! I have trouble getting off my couch chair in front of the computer or TV but I've decided it's a necessary evil if I want to get the rest of my weight off. And you know what? I found I really do enjoy going to the gym.

We're here for ya!

Thanks all. I have got used to no ice cream. I haven't been buying peanut butter either. Haven't got to where I can count calories exactly, but do try. I must look the sight at the supermarkets here, checking fat/carb quantities. Locals could care less. Anyway, hard to check labels sometimes, as local importers stick the Arabic labels over--naturally--the English info.

I'm trying to lose weight not only because it will be healthier for me, and to fit into "old" clothes, but I am not happy with my spare tire. I don't care to look like a body builder, but I at least want to get to "average." Never been slim and svelt, not the most active young kid, but better late than never. At least I don't have to worry about a beer belly, since you can't get beer here. :) {Unless you make your own.} See everyone later. Tomorrow's the weekend for you all; here it's "Monday."

A long way from Vermont......, David

Jeddah...instead of completely doing without the things you love, just control the amount you eat of them. A small scoop of ice cream, a tablespoon of peanut butter, etc. is OK. This new healthier lifestyle is NOT a diet, it's the way I'll eat the rest of my life. I don't want to go the rest of my life without the things I really enjoy. When we start giving up those favorite things is when we set ourselves up to eventually fall back to old habits just to have them.

So you can have them, just be smart about it
