how to "transfer" smilies?

Hey, quick question for you smilie buffs. Is there some special way to save a smilie so you can use it on another board or forum? The best I could ever do was just copy/pasting one frame of the animated ones.

I've copied a few and saved them into My Photos file on my computer. I think they have to be saved in GIF format.
