Rick Inman:
Soooo, is it better to add the 2#s when you add the pony so you can be neutral with both tanks (near) empty? I donno, just a thought. Obviously not an issue if you go to the pony due to equipment malfunction.
Or, am I thinking too much and the real answer is shorter surface swims? ;)
I am a little biased as a good precentage of my dives are deco dives and blowing off a 10-20 ft safety stop or a deco stop after a deep dive is a bad idea. Even with stage/deco bottles that are slightly negative even when empty, I won't drop weight as in the event that I finish a dive without them attached, I still want to be neutral at 15 ft with near empty tanks to ensure I can finish any required stop.

So if your dives are shallow and a saftey or deco stop is not a required item, you would probably do fine shifting the counterweight. Not having to deal with the extra pound or two will simplify bouyancy slightly through the whole dive. Otherwise, if deco or deep diving with a more or less mandatory safety stop is in your future, adding a pound for a counterweight and/or weighting yourself to be neutral at 15 ft with a near empty primary tank and a near empty pony is a better idea.
