On a few occasions I have dove the afternoon I've arrived at a resort. I realize flying after diving in less than 24 hours is a no-no, but I wonder if there are any recommendations, or restrictions, on diving after flying?

The major consideration about jumping in right away is: "Why has it taken so long to get to the fun???"

Seriously, the major problem to counter is the dehydration that occurs when you fly for any length of time. Trust me on this one. Considering what I do for a living, I can tell you that the air in modern jet aircrft is dryer than that in the Sahara Desert. Keep yourself hydrated by drinking water (a lot), and avoiding the "Vacation Libation" until at least a couple of hours after the dive.

Enjoy!

Thanks. Is there a depth beyond which you should not go, on the afternoon you arrive? Yes, I will drink plenty of water to stay hydrated. I'm told to start hydrating a few days before? Drinking before diving is like smoking before diving. NO thanks :)

Hydration and rest are two big concerns. BigJet covered the hydration part. A lot of times when you travel you wake up early, are probably eating like crap and really can't rest on the plane. Not exactly the condition that I want to dive.

The entire reason for not flying after diving is because your loaded with nitrogen, and as you know you get loaded with nitrogen at depth. So diving after flying is fine, provided, of course, that you werent diving just before flying!!

Meant to say drinking liquor before diving. Nothing stronger than orange juice before you dive :)

Yeah, the rest part is a consideration. I have to get up early everytime I travel, unfortunately. I planned on a shallow, 25 ft, shore dive after I arrive to help a friend with proper weighting.

The major problem with flying AFTER diving is that one is stilll off gassing....

As nitrogen is NOT introduced into the body when in a plane, there is ZERO risk flying BEFORE diving (assuming one has NOT been diving Before flying) other than the increased risks that flying may introduce if one fails to stay hydrated, or decides that the only thing better than two beers is FIVE.

mmmmm....Beer...

Would that be imported beer, domestic, micro brew or home brew? It matters.

If you are hydrated and rested, go for it. I typically do an afternoon dive after arriving. That is a 3rd dive for some and is usually 35-40 ft. Since nitrogen is not an issue after flying (as stated above), I do not think there are issues about deep dives. Again providing you are rested and hydrated. Be safe and have fun.
