I just payed the local scuba place where I did all my training for a 6 month rental package. When I was ready to sign out my gear I was "informed" that ankle weights were not part of the package and I would have to dish out another $40 cdn for a set. :losecool: (I dread to see how many new rules will be developed as the next 6 months progresses).

Regardless, how much do these little 2lb chicklet bands cost normally? I think I'm going to force myself to learn how to dive without the training wheels since I've spent so much bloody money already.

The going price for 2 pound ankle weights would be around $35-$40 (US) for the SeaSoft brand.

Since I dropped the ankle weights, not only has my trim improved but my air consumption went down too ;)

hi there
if i may ask, how have you had to pay for the 6 months rental, could you sub let, this might not sound so bright, but if you are paying for 6 months you might want to get your moneys worth if you don't have the time to dive every day, i've not heard of dive clubs renting gear for 6 months this side of the pond
be interesting to know how it works over there

ankle weight's shame we couldn't post em to you for free, i bought some for me to use with my drysuit cost me about $25, but the shipping would bring it to the cost over there

A 6 month rental?? Never heard of that... How much does something like that cost?? I can't believe you couldn't nearly buy the setup for a 6 month rental cost.

And yea... very few people really need ankle weights. Really the thing they are the most use for is wrapping one around the tank valve to get more head weight instead of more foot weight.

Another alternative is to get fins with the training wheels/weights built in --- Jetfins are a good example of a very negatively buoyant fin.

One of my buddies loves ankle weights. I prefer my Jetfins. You can get ankle weights very cheap at sporting goods stores in the exercise section. They don't need to be scuba certified to work underwater. :D

I have been using ankle weights since I got my dry suit, and forgot to wear them on one dive, and it really messed up my trim. Turns out it had absolutely nothing to do with the dry suit, it had to do with my fins. My fins are buoyant, probably about a pound or so in fresh water.

Before anyone suggests getting different fins, I actually like that my fins float. During shore entries in calm water I can simply let them float on the surface if I want. That makes it easier to put fins, gloves and other things.

Its also nice to know that if one falls overboard I have a good chance of recovering it. Don't laugh, one of the guys on an Agressor cruise dropped one of his fins overboard, sank like a rock. Fortunately someone was able to go down and get it.

Besides its four pounds of weight I don't need in my BC.
