I just recently purchased a Browning gun safe in which I now keep everything. I just recently started keeping my $2,000 worth of scuba equipment at the bottom of it. Does anyone else here lock up their stuff or does it not really that important?

I'm careful with my gear, but I don't believe there's much of a market for stolen scuba gear. I think they're going to go for the electronics and leave the speciality items that have limited resale.

I have a "dive closet" (hey, my wife has an entire CRAFT ROOM, so don't get me started...) in an upstairs bedroom with most of my gear in it.

I don't have any room left in my gun safe. I live in the Live Free or Die state, lots of guns, not much crime.

I have a similar question.

For those of you that keep back up equipment in your dive bags (spare reg, computer, etc) do you lock your gear bag while your are underwater and the bag is on the boat? I'm sort of a cynical person...so I'm wondering how trustworthy these dive operations/charters in other countries (or even here in the U.S.) are.

I don't lock up my gear at home, I'm pretty sure in my 'hood the turntables and mixer would get jacked first, then the 2 laptops. I can't really picture anyone lugging a wetsuit down the street.

As far as on dive boats, my experience is limited but it's been pretty good. I have a lock for my bag, but so far I haven't had my gut feeling tell me I needed to lock it.

I do a fair amount of charter boat dives.

My dive bag has a dry-ish internal compartment and a single (long) outside zipper with a TSA-type clip lock. If you wanted the bag you'd just take the bag, but you can't get inside to poke around or surreptitiously pilfer a couple of things without breaking the lock or zipper or cutting the bag -- without me knowing it happened as soon as I get back on the boat.

I have a whole large bedroom and cloest dedicated to just gear. It's not locked. I have all our gear itemized on our home owners policy which covers damage and theft even on vacation or away from the house. I'm not worried.
