Is there a certain number of HP and LP ports I will need on a first stage? Looking into buying my own equipment.

Assuming you will be using a K-valve with a single tank:
1st HP Port for pressure gauge or air integrated dive computer
2nd HP Port (optional) for backup pressure gauge.
1st MP Port for primary second stage.
2nd MP Port for backup second stage (octo).
3rd MP Port for low pressure inflator (to inflate BC).
4th MP Port (optional) for dry suit inflation.
