I've heard wonderful things about Lankayan Island resort...but am lead to believe that the diving is something of a compromise? I'd value any opinions about the resort and its diving.

Wiggsy, for what it's worth, here's my opinion (based on a trip 6 or so years ago).

Yes, very cozy wonderful resort on a charming little island. Great staff from the manager down to the receptionists/ boatboys. If you get one of the bungalows on the beach towards the point, you get a nice private location and nice white sand beach at your doorstep. The rooms back then were very basic. Food was buffet style and I thought was excellent.

The diving on the other hand was so so. If you're a photobug and love shooting small stuff, you'll love the place. Otherwise, I thought Sipidan diving was hands down better.

We went to Lankayan 4 years ago or so and absolutely loved it! The resort is fabu and the staff are wonderful...don't try to keep up with them after diving..you will lose!
If you go, tell Mel, the Dive Instructor a big hello fro Scuba Sue, one of the Happy Divers!

I thought the diving was so so too but a friend of mine went and thought that it was as good as anywhere in Malaysia. I did like the ease of diving and the wreck just off the jetty that I could drop onto whenever I wanted. No whalesharks when I was there and I gather that they are pretty rare even in the peak time around March.

Beautiful island and resort though.

Its not Sipadan but we had a very good time when we spent a week there several years back. The staff was great and diving was pretty good. Snorkeling amidst a school of juvenile blacktip reef sharks when then fed them every evening below the dining area was a real trip.
