Hi Shasta_man

Even though this is "canon" country, and I have an Oly camera, I'll take a shot at your question. Hopefully the brand differences are not a problem.

Some strobes, YS90DXfor example, have a fiber optic cable and sensor that is triggered (in "slave mode") by the camera's internal flash. The cable is connected to a location on the housingwhere the internal flash will register, then routed to the sensor in the strobe head. It's alot simpler than it sounds!

Take care,
Mike

Yup, what he said. The Inons use this method and it works great.

You can also have your internal flash working with a slave controller - like Ikelite's - and that fires the external strobe.

I have used both and not had problems with either method. The slave method is nice because the strobe isn't attached at all to your camera...but you need to be careful that the sensor is receiving light from the internal flash, which can be tricky sometimes.

One of the nice things about the Inon system (maybe others as well I don't know) is that it will fire with 'non-visible' light. This allows you to put a mask over the camera's internal flash which blocks the visible light - thus reducing direct back scatter - but allows the non-visible light through which will fire the external strobe. It's pretty neat!
